The money system in Canada is based on dollars and cents. Visitors are encouraged to exchange their funds for Canadian dollars at a bank or foreign currency exchange outlet, where they will receive the prevailing rate of exchange. The Canadian one-dollar coin is often referred to as a "loonie", while the two-dollar coin is called a "twonie".

Entering Canada, each person may bring in the following duty-free: necessary personal effects; up to 50 cigars; 200 cigarettes; 1 kg. (2.2 lbs.) of tobacco; and 1.1 litres (40 oz.) of spirits or wine, or in lieu, 24 x 355 ml (12 oz.) cans or bottles of beer or ale per person over the age of 19 in B.C. Revolvers, pistols and fully automatic firearms are prohibited entry into Canada.
